March for Our Lives dominates Snapchat's Map

Snapchat remains the top social network for US teens and people under the age of 25. Recently Snap released a version of its map on the web that allows anyone – whether they have Snapchat installed or not – to view the images and videos (“snaps”) people have publicly submitted in various parts of the world. These create heat spots on the map where lots of public activity is occurring, and people can click into those spots to zoom in and see what people are doing a given neighborhood, venue, or public space.

Today, the Map has been absolutely overtaken by gun control marches everywhere! Zoom into any part of the US, and it’s dense with activism and kids giving voice to the #neveragain movement.

Here’s the east, from Dallas to Chicago to Boston.

Here’s the southwest, from Sacramento to Salt Lake City to Albuquerque.

Phoenix. Omaha. Wichita. Milwaukee. Savannah. State College, PA.

Hundreds of marches – amazing to watch and sample across the country. Take a gander!

(For full disclosure, I work on the product team at Snapchat, and focus on location-based experiences. But I’ve also been a Daily Kos member since 2002 (userid #990), and figure this would be of interest to the community. I think this is one of the most exciting things we’ve built, and really provides a promising new angle for citizen journalism.)
